Junior Committee

The Junior Committee (JC) members are Salterns members normally aged 12 (year 8) and over who have volunteered to take responsibility for running the club.  This is a big commitment but an important one. Children learn best when copying other sailors so these committee members are the best people to help young skippers to learn and enjoy sailing.

Most club session have a member of the JC on duty who will help budding sailors with any questions, take them for rides in Scows, show them how to rig the boats or help them learn to sail other boats.

Most of the Junior Committee members learned to sail at Salterns themselves and have been members since they were 6 or 7 or even came here as babies with their older siblings so know just what a child will need to help them progress.

Many of the Junior Committee take their sailing outside Salterns and participate in local and national events.  Between them they have enormous talent and a wealth of information. Please do ask!

Commodore's welcome

"Hello Salterns Sailing Club, I am Sammy your new commodore for 2020. I’m excited about the upcoming year, with lots of fun on the water to be enjoy💦⛵️ I look forward to meeting lots of you at the club. The more members that come along to the great events organised by the JC the more fun we will have. Whatever the weather, we will have fun.

I've been sailing at Salterns since 2011. I was encouraged to join the Bronze Fleet where I found my love of racing. I continued my racing by joining RLymYC where I raced my first youth week in 2013. In 2015 my Mum and Dad took me to Weymouth where I entered the End of Seasons in my Oppie ‘Swift’ I took 15th place and my racing went from there. Salterns for me is a great place to learn to sail and gain confidence on the water. Eight Acre Pond is a fun place to sail and with the amazing JC are always happy to help you feel more confident out on the water, remember to just ask and we will enjoy working with you.

The JC and I are excited to make 2020 a year to remember. This year will also be the 22nd Sail-a-thon for Children in Need - let's raise as much as we can, children raising money for children who are less fortunate. We also have a new charity ‘Olivia Inspires’ and I’m excited for some new events to support Olivia’s family with her charity.

If you have any great ideas please let us know, I look forward to seeing you all soon. Let the 2020 fun begin...........⛵️"

Anyone wishing to join the JC should speak to one of the JC first to find out what it is about and then contact the Junior Liaison Officer to ask for an application form. This needs to be returned by end of October each year.  There is a limit to the number who can be on the JC and the minimum age is normally 12 (year 8).
